COLDPLAY A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD

Coldplay required a lifetime to make their wonderfully assured debut, Parachutes. But it took less than two years for the moody British quartet to deliver a masterful follow-up. As a band, Coldplay have advanced to a stage where they outshine nearly every one of their rivals in terms of imagination and emotional pull. A Rush of Blood to the Head is a soulful, exhilarating journey, moving from the cathartic rock of "Politik" to the hushed tones of "Green Eyes" without once breaking its mesmerizing spell. Singer Chris Martin takes his voice on soaring flights, reaching places only Jeff Buckley previously dared to go. And the music is nearly flawless, a persuasive cross between Pink Floyd and the Verve. Even if they haven't come up with another "Yellow," you would be hard-pressed to care. New Orleans and Atlanta both have mega-cliques holding down their local rap reputations. Well, Memphis, Tennessee, has one too. The Hypnotize Minds label, home of the Three 6 Mafia, has been wreaking havoc on local dancefloors (with tracks like the Mafia's 1996 underground smash, "Tear Da Club Up") since 1993. Veterans of lyrical disorder, this group is well known for its slasher-flick lyrical content (cartoon violence, misogyny). When the Smoke Clears is infested with the Mafia's signature horror-core lyrics, but producers Juicy J and DJ Paul's beats show a growth in individuality. Their intoxicating first single, "Sippin' on Some Syrup," (featuring Texas's UGK) is 2000's Funky Cold Medina, though the Three 6 video isn't as funny as Tone Loc's. There are several other potential hits on the album, including "I'm So High" and "Where da Cheese At." An appropriate collaboration with twisted brothers-from-another-mother Insane Clown Posse also adds to the mayhem. But unfortunately, at 22 tracks, this deviant Dirty South album overstays its welcome. --Vanessa Satten

One might reasonably expect Tomcats to be the Porky's of 2001: after all, it concerns a group of young, sexist morons and their fears and fantasies about young women. But Tomcats isn't quite as brain-dead as that, though it is phenomenally more neurotic. Jerry O'Connell plays one of two remaining bachelors within a group of wealthy pals who set aside a cash reward, years before, earmarked for the last among them to get married. O'Connell needs the money to pay off a gambling debt, but his problem is that the other bachelor is a horrendous pig (Jake Busey) unlikely ever to land a gal. A general mean-spiritedness flows through this wearying comedy, manifest in such ugly moments as watching someone's girlfriend run over by a golf cart and an excised, cancerous testicle kicked around hospital hallways. If you're looking for female flesh, however, forget it: Tomcats is far more driven to explore male nudity, while making equally naked today's masculine fears of impotence, mothers, and lesbians. --Tom Keogh
